Designing for today - and tomorrow
When building The Beach we will take into account:
- the threat posed by rising sea levels and the creation of improved sea defences
- the south-facing nature of the site which could be used to harness solar energy
- the apartments themselves, which will be designed to be robust and durable because of their exposed location
- the internal layouts, which will provide flexible accommodation to cater for occupants’ varying needs
- the need to update The Beach in the future with the latest technology
Energy and Water
An energy strategy will be devised which will look at using renewable energy sources. These could include harnessing the power of the sun through solar water heating and using photo voltaic panels to provide electricity. A prime objective will be to reduce CO2 emissions (a major contributor to global warming) by reducing energy consumption.
We also examine the opportunities to conserve rainwater through specially designed drains and to harvest it for irrigation.
Minimising Pollution
We intend to minimise air, noise and water pollution at all times. We will also be sensitive to other potential problems for local residents, such as light spill, hours of working, haulage and delivery routes.
Protecting and Enhancing the Ecology
An ecologist will be employed to advise on what needs to be done to preserve the existing ecology of the site and how to enhance it in the future. A landscape architect will then draw up plans to improve the ecological value of the site and increase the number and variety of species present.
