Sustainability

Providing the facilities for visitors to enjoy their holiday experience is key to the success of the development and making sustainable lifestyles accessible, appealing and adoptable.

The sustainability framework for the project outlines the key themes of sustainability and sets out a number of aims and objectives that should be achieved at all stages of the project (design, planning, construction and operation).

The aims and objectives are set out in the diagram below.

Examples from the framework’s targets follow and show what the development should include:

Climate Change and Energy. A strategy that promotes energy efficiency before applying renewable energy technologies should be an important element in the design of the project. A minimum of 15% of renewable energy should be supplied through onsite renewable energy technologies.

Resource Efficiency should be addressed through the orientation, massing, shading and form of the proposed buildings. All buildings in the development should be designed to be naturally ventilated. A variety of options should be considered to reduce the water demand of the development (e.g. use of grey water, water from Sandy River, use of sea water for swimming pools, etc.)

The proposed development should seek to minimise waste particularly at the construction stage by adopting best practice approaches (the project should aim for 90% of demolition waste to be re-used/recycled).

Buildings and Business. The proposed development should make a commitment to measure its proposals against sustainability standards. Appropriate standards should be included in the sustainability framework to ensure the provision of a high quality sustainable lifestyle for its visitors (to include targets equivalent to Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM, Green Tourism Business scheme and South West Sustainability Checklist).
