Inspiring Design

Cornish culture, history and the environment - including the towns and villages - are key reasons why visitors are attracted to the county.

We want to draw on these reasons, relate the design to the character of the site and achieve a development that is contemporary but sympathetic to the natural environment. Our emerging thoughts for the design are:

  • Crinnis Beach — to contain a large amount of the development on this previously developed site but without being any taller than the cliffs. Leisure and commercial uses will be focused here
  • Shorthorn Beach — to be characterised by landscaping with smaller scale buildings
  • Polgaver Beach — a focus for outdoor leisure, making use of the open beach and wooded area to the rear

We need to think about:

  • The scale of buildings and spaces — how do we capture the character of Cornish villages?
  • What materials are appropriate to the area, taking into account sustainability.
  • How tall can buildings be — we think we should stay below cliff height.
  • How can we achieve a contemporary design with a scheme rooted in Cornish character?
  • How can the development be pedestrian dominated?
  • What is the correct approach to landscaping — what plants should be used?

Our intention is to discuss these matters in more detail at subsequent public exhibitions.
