Sea Defences
Ensuring that the proposed development is safe for all is an essential component of the design process. The Development Brief identifies that the proposed development should:
Create a naturally stable beach
Ensure that the proposed sea defences meet current requirements for a 100 year life (including allowance for climate change)
Include a concrete recurved wall with a rock armour toe at Crinnis. This will also create a larger area for public use in front of the sea wall as it should be set back on average approximately 27 metres further landward than the previous proposals
Consider the use of softer defences for Shorthorn (natural ‘beach’ material with an engineered core and about a 60m set back in comparison with the previous proposals)
Design a route for the Sandy River to discharge into the sea that meets the requirements of current guidelines (including climate change)
Include a storm warning system to further enhance site safety
Not include beach management, other than amenity management required for localised raking of the beach, litter collection, etc.

Our sea defence expert (HR Wallingford) has met with the Environment Agency to discuss the requirements for sea defences and is in the process of creating models that will be tested under laboratory conditions to ensure that the correct level of protection can be provided.
